Agafay Desert
Lunar hills, Atlas peaks on the horizon and camps that come alive at sunset. Here is how to plan an Agafay day or night, and every Agafay experience our Marrakech team runs.
The Agafay Desert is the closest desert landscape to Marrakech: a rolling expanse of grey-gold stone and dried clay that looks like the Sahara without the ten-hour drive. It stretches south-west of the city towards the Lalla Takerkoust lake, with the snow-tipped High Atlas rising behind it.
Because it is so close, Agafay is the easiest way to add a desert night to a short Marrakech trip. Most visitors go in the late afternoon: an activity on the hills, then sunset drinks and a Moroccan dinner in a tented camp before driving back to the medina. Those with more time sleep over in a camp and watch sunrise over the plateau, or fly above it in a hot air balloon at dawn.
Every Agafay experience below is operated with vetted local partners, includes private transport from your accommodation, and is confirmed on WhatsApp, you pay on arrival.
30 km from Marrakech, 40–50 minutes door to door. Private transfer included on every Agafay experience, no taxi haggling, no shared minibus.
Quad biking and buggy circuits across the stone hills, camel rides along the ridges, or a lunch-and-pool day pass at a desert camp.
Sunset drinks, a Moroccan dinner in a lantern-lit camp, live Gnawa drumming and firepit music, then stars with no city glow.
Half a day for quads or camels, a full evening for dinner packages, and around 4 hours pre-dawn for a hot air balloon flight over the hills.
Quad biking, camel rides, balloon flights, pool day passes and sunset dinner packages - book the one that fits your evening.

Ride across the lunar landscape of the Agafay Desert on a powerful quad bike. After a safety briefing with your guide, follow rocky tracks, dry riverbeds and Berber trails with the snow-topped Atlas Mountains on the horizon. Halfway through you stop for mint tea in a Berber tent before riding back through the golden hills.

Take the wheel of a two-seater buggy and tear across the stone desert of Agafay. Faster and more powerful than a quad, the buggy handles the dunes, dry riverbeds and hill climbs with ease while your guide leads the route. Expect wide open views, plenty of dust and one of the most exhilarating afternoons near Marrakech.

Follow a Berber camel handler across the pale hills of the Agafay Desert on a calm one-hour ride. Traditional dress is offered for photographs, the pace is gentle enough for families, and the ride ends with sweet mint tea served in a nomad tent facing the Atlas Mountains.

Lift off at first light and float silently over the desert plains, Berber villages and palm groves north of Marrakech, with the High Atlas glowing on the horizon. After landing you are welcomed with a traditional Moroccan breakfast in a nomad tent before being driven back to your hotel.

Spend a slow, sunlit day at a desert camp in Agafay: a pool overlooking the stone desert, shaded loungers, towels provided and a generous Moroccan lunch served under the tent. It is the easiest way to swap the medina heat for silence, mountain views and a swim.

As the sun drops behind the Atlas, the Agafay camp lights hundreds of lanterns for an evening of Moroccan hospitality: pool access on arrival, a full traditional dinner under the stars, then belly dancing, Gnawa musicians and a fire show around the campfire.
