Agafay is not sand dunes — it is a rolling stone desert about forty minutes from Marrakech, with the Atlas Mountains as a backdrop. It is the reason you can have a desert evening without a three-day drive.

When to go: October to April is ideal. In summer, aim for a sunset departure around 5pm and bring a light layer for the night.

What a good camp looks like: shaded lounge tents, real bathrooms, a proper kitchen rather than reheated food, and a limit on the number of guests. Camps that pack in hundreds of people lose the silence that makes Agafay special.

What to do there: camel or quad rides at golden hour, a swim if the camp has a pool, dinner with live gnawa music, then stargazing once the generators are turned down.

What to bring: a jacket, closed shoes, sunglasses and a camera. Everything else is provided.
